The long-awaited replacement for the Pattullo Bridge, known as the Riverview Bridge or stal̕əw̓asəm, has finally opened partially after facing delays and with a hefty price tag exceeding $1 billion.
A new northbound lane became operational on Wednesday morning as part of the initial phase to transition drivers to the new bridge while the old Pattullo Bridge remains fully functional for now.
Transportation Minister Mike Farnworth expressed hopes of having all four lanes of the new bridge operational by February, with a temporary simultaneous shutdown of both bridges planned for mid-to-late January, causing potential traffic disruptions on nearby alternatives like the Alex Fraser and Port Mann bridges.
The completed Riverview Bridge will feature modern and wider lanes divided by a central median barrier, along with expanded walking and cycling paths in both directions. The project also includes upgrades to road networks on both ends to improve connections for commuters traveling between New Westminster and Surrey.
Full functionality of the new bridge, reconnecting to King George Boulevard and McBride Boulevard, will be realized once all four lanes are open, including the off-ramp to Columbia Street.
However, the dismantling of the old crossing is expected to take at least two years, delaying the final completion of certain parts of the new bridge.
The overall cost for the project is estimated at $1.637 billion.
