Uncover the secrets of Sherlock Holmes in a captivating new exhibition at the Pointe-à-Callière Museum, transporting visitors to the intriguing world of Victorian London and the early days of investigative policing in Montreal.

“Sherlock Holmes: Cracking the Case” is now open to the public until March 8, 2026, offering a deep dive into the life of renowned author Arthur Conan Doyle, the scientific breakthroughs that influenced his writing, and the enduring legacy of his iconic detective.

As Canada’s largest archaeology museum established in 1992, Pointe-à-Callière has meticulously recreated life-size scenes from 19th-century London, an era marked by rapid advancements in science and technology that revolutionized criminal investigation.

Guests are invited to step into the shoes of detectives, following clues, analyzing evidence, and putting their deductive skills to the test to solve a thrilling fictional mystery inspired by Sherlock Holmes. The exhibition also showcases personal items belonging to Conan Doyle, some of which are being exhibited for the first time in North America.

Jenny Jodoin, the project manager of the exhibition, emphasized the immersive nature of the experience, aiming to fully engage visitors in the world of Sherlock Holmes and the fascinating history behind the character and its creator.

With a focus on both newcomers and long-time fans, the exhibition delves into the emergence of investigative policing in Montreal during the early 20th century, shedding light on the city’s battle against organized crime, the red-light district, and the opium trade, as well as the pioneering efforts of figures like Silas Carpenter, a local detective often likened to Holmes.

The exhibition not only celebrates the iconic detective but also spotlights the historical connections between London and Montreal, revealing how innovations in police work in the two cities mirrored each other during that period.

Designed to be educational and interactive, the exhibition invites visitors of all ages and levels of familiarity with Sherlock Holmes to embark on a journey of discovery and deduction. Rare and significant artifacts, including personal belongings of Arthur Conan Doyle, enrich the experience, offering a glimpse into the private world of the beloved author.

The exhibition is divided into two sections, blending historical insights with hands-on activities that challenge visitors to think like Sherlock Holmes and solve a mystery. From lectures on Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes to engaging activities for young and general audiences, the museum offers a comprehensive and immersive experience for all who step through its doors.
