As Montreal welcomes the new year, all eyes are on the winter forecast for 2026. Will the snow and cold stick around or will an early thaw surprise us all?
CityNews recently caught up with David Phillips, a climatologist from Environment and Climate Change Canada, to get insight into what the upcoming season has in store.
Reflecting on the diverse weather in December, Phillips highlighted the mix of conditions from the polar vortex to a warm pre-Christmas spell. Looking ahead, he forecasts a relatively normal to slightly warmer winter, making it ideal for outdoor activities like skiing, snowmobiling, and skating.
While there may be occasional challenging weather days, overall, Montrealers can expect a more winter-like season compared to the early December extremes. As for spring, Phillips notes that while the snow may melt due to various weather forces, Montreal could still experience some significant snowstorms in March.
So, Montrealers, brace yourselves for a winter that offers a mix of conditions, with the possibility of a white spring on the horizon.
