Tragic Fire Claims Two Lives and Injures One in Marieville Apartment Tragedy

In a devastating incident that took place early Friday morning in Marieville, tragedy struck as a fire engulfed an apartment building in the Montérégie region, claiming the lives of two individuals and injuring one.

Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene on Sainte-Marie Street at 2:30 a.m., where a four-unit building was ablaze. After a rigorous effort, the fire was eventually brought under control by the dedicated firefighters.

Sgt. Laurie Avoine, the spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), revealed that amidst the chaos, one individual was discovered unconscious in the building. Despite efforts to save them, the person tragically succumbed to the effects of the fire after being rushed to the hospital. The victim, a young woman in her 20s, has yet to be identified.

Tragically, a second person was also found within the building and was pronounced dead at the scene, adding to the sorrow of the community. Authorities are currently working to confirm whether this victim was among those reported missing, with formal identification procedures underway.

Additionally, a woman who managed to evacuate the burning building was hospitalized for smoke inhalation. Fortunately, her condition is stable, and her life is not believed to be in immediate danger.

While the fire has left the building in ruins, displacing its residents indefinitely, investigators comprising a team from the Major Crimes Division and fire scene technicians are diligently working to unravel the causes and circumstances that led to this tragic event. As of now, the exact origin of the fire remains unknown, with an active investigation by the SQ underway.
