Police Oversight Body Probes Deadly Collision in Chilliwack

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is conducting an inquiry into a tragic accident that occurred in Chilliwack on Boxing Day.

Late in the evening, the Chilliwack RCMP responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a white Ford pickup truck at the intersection of Yale and Banford roads. Sadly, the driver of the truck was pronounced dead as a result of the collision.

According to the IIO, there was no prior police interaction with the pickup truck before the crash, and the IIO was not initially informed about the incident. However, following public input received on December 29, the IIO has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Initial reports from the authorities revealed that the driver, a 27-year-old man, was the sole occupant of the vehicle when he lost control and collided with a power pole. While alcohol was not suspected to be a factor, speed possibly played a role in the accident.

The IIO serves as an independent oversight body for law enforcement officials and correctional officers in British Columbia. Its mandate includes examining incidents resulting in death or severe injury that involve the police, irrespective of any misconduct allegations.

Individuals who have details pertinent to the incident are encouraged to contact the IIO Witness Line at 1-855-446-8477 or submit information through the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
