London Drugs Shuts Doors in Vancouver’s DTES Amid Rising Concerns

London Drugs, a popular retail pharmacy chain, is closing its Vancouver Downtown Eastside store due to issues of theft, violence, and vandalism. The store, located in the Woodward’s Building at the intersection of West Hastings Street and Abbott Street, has reportedly faced financial challenges, losing tens of millions of dollars to theft since its opening in 2009.

London Drugs President Clint Mahlman expressed concerns over the unsustainability of the situation, stating that despite efforts to support the community, the store has incurred unprecedented losses. While acknowledging support from the Vancouver Police Department in addressing violence against staff, Mahlman emphasized the need for broader justice system reforms to tackle repeat offenders causing crime in the area.

The decision to close the store comes after ongoing financial struggles, with the store being considered for closure a year ago. Other businesses in the area, such as TD Bank and JJ Beans, have also withdrawn in recent years, raising concerns about the impact on the community’s well-being. Vancouver City Coun. Peter Meiszner has called for provincial intervention to address the challenges faced by the neighborhood.

Despite the closure, London Drugs aims to support its 90 employees by offering transition opportunities to other Vancouver locations. The store is set to shut its doors on Feb. 1, marking the end of an era for this Downtown Eastside location.
