Montreal police have apprehended a 38-year-old individual for allegedly setting fire to an empty building in downtown Montreal on Friday morning.
Authorities were alerted to the incident when a 911 call reported a blaze at a location on St-Marc Street, close to Ste-Catherine Street, at approximately 5 a.m. Firefighters quickly responded and were able to contain the fire.
According to SPVM spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant, witnesses claimed to have spotted a man exiting the abandoned building, prompting police to suspect foul play in the fire’s origin. Subsequently, the suspect was taken into custody near the scene.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the building was unoccupied. To facilitate ongoing investigations, a security perimeter has been established, resulting in the closure of Ste-Catherine and St-Marc Streets.
