“Canada Faces Rising Unemployment in December; B.C. Defies Trend with Steady Job Market”

Canada’s Job Market Update for December 2025 Revealed

Canada’s economy saw a modest gain of 8,200 jobs in December, according to the recent Labour Force Survey by Statistics Canada. However, despite the increase in employment, the national unemployment rate inched up by 0.3 percentage points to 6.8 percent compared to the previous month due to more people actively seeking work.

The report highlighted that while the economy had seen growth in employment in sectors like health care and social assistance, there was a decline in professional, scientific, and technical services.

In British Columbia, the unemployment rate held steady at 6.4 percent in December.

On the other hand, Merchant Growth, a financial company specializing in small business financing, expressed concerns about the job market dynamics for small businesses in Canada. The company noted that while larger firms had added around 292,000 jobs over the past year, small businesses, which account for almost 90 percent of the private-sector workforce, had lost over 300,000 jobs.

Merchant Growth’s Chief Growth Officer, Joe Cote, emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses, urging consumers to redirect a portion of their spending to aid small businesses struggling with hiring and growth challenges.
