Surrey police are currently investigating a recent shooting incident at a business in the Newton neighborhood, suspected to be linked to extortion activities. The incident, which occurred around 2 a.m., caused damage to the business on King George Boulevard near 80 Avenue, but fortunately, no injuries were reported.
According to a statement from the Surrey Police Service (SPS), this marks the 16th extortion-related investigation since the beginning of the year, with three of these cases involving shootings. Sgt. Tige Pollock acknowledged the concerns of residents and assured that additional resources have been deployed to address the situation.
The SPS is collaborating with the provincial extortion task force, increasing officer numbers, and employing various methods, both overt and covert, to combat the issue. Resources have been reallocated to focus more on extortion cases while maintaining frontline services and timely response to calls for assistance.
