Turmoil Strikes: Legault’s Party Scrambles Amid Sudden Resignation

The Coalition Avenir Québec, led by Quebec Premier François Legault, is on the lookout for a new leader as the upcoming provincial election draws near.

On Wednesday, Legault revealed his plans to step down in the near future, allowing the party to select his successor.

In a meeting scheduled for Wednesday evening, the party’s executive team will strategize the process for the leadership race, which will feature debates and a defined timeline.

Since its inception in 2011, Legault has been the sole leader of the CAQ, securing consecutive majority mandates in 2018 and 2022.

As the party gears up for the upcoming election on Oct. 5, the imminent leader faces the critical task of taking a stance on sovereignty, particularly with the Parti Québécois, a leading contender in the polls, hinting at a possible referendum if victorious.

In preparation for the election, the party is set to conduct its first-ever leadership race and participate in a byelection in the Chicoutimi riding.

While no official candidate has been put forth for the party leadership yet, names such as cabinet ministers Sonia LeBel, Simon Jolin-Barrette, and Bernard Drainville are being speculated.
