Sun Youth reopens food bank in new Montreal home

Sun Youth has reopened its food bank in a new, larger building in Montreal, a move the organization says will help it better meet the needs of vulnerable individuals and families.

The non-profit has begun operating out of a new 40,000-square-foot facility on Saint-Laurent Blvd., across from Jarry Park and just a few blocks from its former location on Parc Ave.

The food bank reopened earlier this week as staff gradually transition into the new space.

Sun Youth says the expanded facilities will improve its ability to respond to demand, though the full move is still underway.

An official inauguration of the building is planned for May.

The food bank has been operated by Sun Youth since 1981 and was the first of its kind in Montreal and the second in Canada.

The project was funded through $10.7 million in federal support, along with $15.9 million raised through a fundraising campaign.
