“Quebec Parents Struggle as Childcare Registration Portal Fails”

In Quebec, over 30,000 children are eagerly awaiting a spot in early childhood education and care services (EGES), as per the most recent data from the Ministry of Families. Surprisingly, despite this high demand, childcare centers had numerous vacancies still available in mid-September.

A survey conducted by the Association of Early Childhood Centre Managers (ACCPE) found that over 63% of respondents had empty spaces as they prepared for the new school year in May. Directors attribute this to the challenges posed by a new registration portal, which has significantly increased the time needed to fill spots.

Vanessa Gagnon-Desjardins, from CPE Les p’tits Montois in Bas-Saint-Laurent, shared that a process that previously took her less than a week now takes up to two weeks.

The new deadlines imposed by the ministry since the introduction of the portal are causing delays. Parents are required to visit the center within five days of initial contact, with only two days to respond. Directors can only collect one child’s name at a time, leading to accumulating deadlines for each new attempt to fill a space.

The system’s flaws have led to children being referred despite already being registered elsewhere or even having refused a spot before. Directors are spending significant time on numerous fruitless calls due to outdated information, hindering progress.

Childcare service directors have been urging the government to address these referral anomalies, which have also affected the allocation of spots based on age criteria.
