The 35th edition of Black History Month kicked off with a vibrant gathering at Place des Arts, embracing the theme “Together, Let’s Raise Our Voices.” This year, key Black-led organizations, including the Round Table on Black History Month and Fondation Dynastie, are celebrating significant milestones: 35 years of advocacy and education for the Round Table, and 10 years of honoring Black excellence through the Gala Dynastie in Quebec’s cultural realm.
Jamillah Jean, the visionary behind Roots to Routes Academy, described the Black Winter Fest as a groundbreaking initiative reclaiming winter spaces through a month-long celebration of winter activities and sports. This inclusive movement aims to challenge traditional narratives and redefine who belongs in winter environments.
At the event, the Round Table shared insights on the anniversary edition, introduced this year’s distinguished awardees, and outlined the program’s exciting highlights. Speakers also delved into the pressing issue of systemic racism in Quebec, underscoring the significance of grassroots initiatives in fostering community empowerment.
Highlighting the importance of unity and amplifying voices, Jamillah Jean emphasized the freedom to express oneself authentically without the need for conformity or masking one’s identity.
The conference also shed light on Héma-Québec’s upcoming blood drive on Feb. 14, designed to support Black communities affected by sickle cell anemia, a condition that disproportionately impacts individuals of African descent. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the critical need for blood donations within the Black community to aid those battling this debilitating disease.
Additionally, Fondation Dynastie revealed details of the upcoming 10th edition of the Gala Dynastie, themed “The End of an Era.” This milestone gala will serve as a tribute to the collective efforts of teams, artists, volunteers, and partners who have shaped the event over the last decade.
