Firefighters swiftly responded to a blaze that erupted at Woodland Park Elementary in Surrey’s Guildford neighborhood on a Friday evening.
According to Surrey Fire Services (SFS), their team was on the scene shortly after 11:30 p.m.
Assistant Chief Mike McNamara of SFS informed 1130 NewsRadio that the fire originated in a storage room.
Upon arrival, McNamara stated, “Smoke was detected, and upon entering the building, we located the source of the fire. It was contained within a storage room on the school premises, and our firefighters successfully extinguished it.”
Sixteen firefighters were deployed to tackle the incident.
McNamara mentioned, “An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the fire. We aim to gather more information about the contents of the storage room in question.”
Although the fire was limited to the storage area, the activation of sprinklers led to water damage in various parts of the school.
In response to the damage, a restoration company has been engaged to address the aftermath.
Efforts are ongoing to eliminate any lingering smoke odors, noted McNamara.
Woodland Park Elementary will be closed on Monday, as confirmed by the Surrey School District.
The district assured, “Updates regarding the school’s operations and the next steps will be communicated directly to families and staff.”
Surrey Police Service has indicated that the fire is not being treated as suspicious.
