Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, delivered a heartfelt message of sorrow and optimism on Wednesday following a tragic mass shooting in a remote British Columbia town that claimed 10 lives and left many others wounded.
Addressing the House of Commons, Carney expressed the profound shock that the nation is experiencing in the wake of the horrific incident.
He praised the bravery of the numerous first responders and RCMP officers who heroically rushed into Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, facing unknown dangers with unwavering courage.
Acknowledging the exceptional courage of the school staff and teachers who selflessly shielded the children under their care, Carney emphasized, “In the midst of darkness, they exemplified the best of our nation.”
Describing Tumbler Ridge as a tight-knit community of approximately 2,400 residents nestled in the stunning landscapes of the Rockies, the Prime Minister highlighted its resilience and camaraderie. He commended the town’s history of mutual support, particularly during challenging times such as wildfires and economic setbacks.
Carney assured that federal authorities are actively liaising with British Columbia Premier David Eby and local officials to coordinate a unified response from Canada.
“While there will be tough discussions and necessary inquiries in the days to come, the focus now is on mourning and honoring the victims. This moment belongs to the people of Tumbler Ridge and the Peace River Region, who are enduring an unimaginable ordeal,” he stated.
Expressing solidarity with the grief-stricken community, Carney conveyed a message of unity and strength, affirming that all of Canada stands in solidarity with Tumbler Ridge during this difficult period.
