SPS confirms crash involving police vehicle

A Surrey Police Service (SPS) vehicle is confirmed to have been involved in a crash Tuesday morning.

Callers to 1130 News Radio first reported the multi-vehicle crash along 16 Avenue near 168 Street around 6 a.m.

In a statement, the SPS said officers were investigating reports of a possible impaired driver in the area, and confirmed only that a “Surrey Police Service vehicle was involved in a collision.”

It added that B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office has not yet been notified.

The IIO is the civilian oversight agency for police and detention guards in B.C. It’s called to investigate after any police-related incidents that result in death or serious injury, whether or not there are any allegations of wrongdoing.

As of 7 a.m., the crash is affecting westbound traffic on 16 Avenue. Drivers can use 24 Avenue to avoid delays.
