IIO called after driver dies allegedly fleeing Abbotsford police

One person is dead after allegedly driving away from Abbotsford police and crashing into a tree Monday night.

The Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) says an officer was trying to stop the driver of a Dodge Ram truck for speeding on Maclure Road near Townline Road around 11:30 p.m.

Police say the driver “fled from the attempted traffic stop,” lost control speeding away, and collided with a tree near Old Yale Road.

“The driver of the vehicle was located deceased at the scene,” said a police statement Tuesday morning, adding that no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The AbbyPD says it has notified B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office (IIO).

The IIO is the civilian oversight agency for police and detention guards in B.C. It’s called to investigate after any police-related incidents that result in death or serious injury, whether or not there are any allegations of wrongdoing.

The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) was also called to the scene.

As of Tuesday morning, Maclure Road, between Townline Road and Clearbrook Road, remains closed as investigators work.

Witnesses or those with dashcam video of the incident are asked to call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225.
