In an effort to advance its investigation, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has released the name of the victim in a shooting at an Abbotsford encampment earlier this week.
At around 11 p.m. Monday, the Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) responded to reports of a shooting at a park-and-ride lot in the area of Parallel Road and Whatcom Road that has developed into an encampment of residents in tents and RVs.
When they arrived, they found 69-year-old Wayne Versfelt of Abbotsford suffering from life-threatening injuries.
He was taken to hospital and later died.

IHIT says it appears this was an isolated and targeted incident between residents in the encampment and is not believed to be related to gang activity or extortion.
Sgt. Freda Fong tells 1130 NewsRadio there have been no arrests or charges.
“We want to assure the public that persons of interest have been identified to reinforce the fact that this wasn’t a random incident, and we don’t believe there is any ongoing risk to the public.”
Fong says police believe there are people with information about the shooting who have not yet spoken to police.
Anyone with information is asked to call IHIT at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
