City of Victoria issues shelter in place notice after chlorine gas sends 8 to hospital

The City of Victoria has issued an alert for people near the Crystal Pool area.

A Shelter in Place notice went out just after 11 a.m. Friday morning.

According to City of Victoria spokeswoman Colleen Mycroft, two chemicals at the pool mixed, resulting in chlorine gas sending eight people to hospital.

People were evacuated from the pool.

“Four ambulances with primary care paramedics, an ambulance with advanced care paramedics, a link and referral unit and a paramedic supervisor responded to the scene. Paramedics assessed 10 patients and transported eight patients to hospital in stable condition,” said BCEHS Paramedic public information officer Brian Twaites.

The Shelter in Place notice asks people to go inside their home or avoid the area, close all windows, doors, and turn off ventilation systems.

Anyone with symptoms of exposure, including burning eyes and lungs, is advised to seek medical attention.

As of 2:30 p.m., Quadra Street was still closed from Bay Street to Caledonia Avenue.
