Spring flooding: City of Laval activates protection plan as water levels expected to rise

The City of Laval says it has activated its flood protection plan Wednesday amid “minor flooding” in several streets in Laval-Ouest and Fabreville.

In a press release, authorities said they were stepping up their vigilance as water levels have increased in Prairies and Mille-Îles rivers in the recent days amid spring thaw.

“Some streets are impassable due to minor flooding, particularly in the Laval-Ouest and Fabreville areas, including Riviera and 41st Street, 8th and 9th Avenues, and Riviera Street between 51st and 53rd Avenues, near the Goélands riverbank,” the City said.

However, officials say that that firefighter intervention was not required.

“Preventive patrols are underway, and municipal teams are providing continuous monitoring.”

“The Municipal Civil Protection Plan has been activated, and the various operational teams are coordinating to gradually implement the necessary preventive measures,” the City said.

The City also announced a number of measures, including the installation of a flooding barrier on Riviera Street within the next five days. A pump and a generator has been set up at the Laval-sur-le-Lac curling centre.

In addition, active monitoring of the embankments is being conducted in the Mille-Îles and Bellevue areas.

Water levels are expected to continue rising over the next week.
