Burnaby apartment fire leaves 40 people displaced

A fire in an apartment building at Willingdon Avenue and Imperial Street in Burnaby left 40 residents displaced on Saturday evening.

The fire on the third-floor walk-up gutted one apartment and left one woman with shortness of breath from the smoke.

There were no serious injuries.

Deputy Assistant Fire Chief Joe Mora spoke with News 1130 and said that crews were called in around 6 p.m. and 13 trucks responded.

“One suite was gutted, but the entire building had smoke damage throughout, and there was also water damage in the area where the fire started,” said Mora.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but the fire is under investigation.

Smoke could be seen as far away as Metrotown, and Mora said the smoke was visible from 12 blocks away on Imperial Street.

People displaced from the fire were sent to a temporary shelter at Bonser Recreation Centre.
