Montreal firefighters respond to 2 fires at Notre-Dame homeless encampment

Two fires broke out within an hour of each other at a homeless encampment in Montreal’s Hochelaga neighbourhood Tuesday evening.

The Montreal Fire Department (SIM) were called around 6:45 p.m. about a fire in the encampment near the intersection of Notre-Dame and Davidson Streets.

SIM crews dispatched to the scene quickly brought the flames under control, which had ignited in a pile of waste.

Shortly before 8 p.m., SIM was alerted to another fire, larger than the first, was reported close to the same location, who observed that it had spread to tents in the encampment.

However, firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire. There were no evacuations due to either fire.

No one was injured in either fire, the cause of which is not yet known, according to SIM section chief Francis Fleury.
