Just after 8 a.m. on Sunday Nanaimo RCMP responded to a report of an explosion in a wooded area.
The area was near Cypress Street and Terminal Avenue North.
To minimize the risk to the public and to allow investigators to respond safely, police officers closed a section of Terminal Avenue North to both vehicles and pedestrians.
Along with RCMP, Nanaimo Fire Rescue and BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) responded.
The RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit was consulted and RCMP Forensic Identification Services also attended the scene.
While the investigation is ongoing, preliminary findings indicate that the explosion was likely caused by an e-bike battery exploding.
There were no reports of injuries or damage to the surrounding property.
Terminal Avenue North was reopened to the public at 10 a.m.
