Police maintained a heavy presence around the Bell Centre on Sunday night as crowds gathered following a watch party for Game 7 of a playoff series between the Montreal Canadiens and the Buffalo Sabres.
A large number of officers were deployed to manage the crowd.
According to police, most of the crowd dispersed calmly after the end of the game, and no major disturbances were reported at that time.
However, officers say a few fireworks were set off. At least two people were detained, and offence notices are expected to be issued under new legislation aimed at promoting peace, order and public safety in Quebec.
Later in the evening, around 11:40 p.m., near the intersection of Peel Street and Sainte-Catherine Street in the downtown core, police encountered a small group of individuals who allegedly threw bottles and garbage cans at officers. Tear gas was deployed in response to disperse the group.
Shortly after midnight, around 12:15 a.m., near the intersection of Mansfield Street and René-Lévesque Boulevard, fireworks were reportedly launched in the direction of mounted officers from the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) cavalry unit. Police conducted crowd-dispersal manoeuvres targeting a small group. No arrests were made in that instance.
