Montreal police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that caused significant property damage in Ville-Marie borough overnight.
Emergency calls began coming in around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday after an SUV struck a traffic light near the intersection of Notre-Dame Street East and De Lorimier Ave.
When officers arrived, the vehicle was found abandoned at the scene, while the driver was nowhere to be located.
Preliminary information suggests the SUV had been travelling westbound at a high speed before slamming into a traffic signal pole.
Authorities have not yet identified the person behind the wheel, and investigators are continuing efforts to track them down.
A secured area has been established as police examine the scene and review nearby surveillance cameras that may have captured the collision.
The crash also led to several road closures in the area. Westbound traffic on Notre-Dame Street is blocked between René-Lévesque Blvd. and De Lorimier Ave., while northbound lanes on De Lorimier Ave. are closed from Notre-Dame Street to René-Lévesque Blvd.
Police remain at the scene to manage traffic flow.
The investigation is ongoing.
