Cyclist found unconscious in Montreal’s LaSalle borough

A cyclist who managed to avoid a collision with a vehicle on Saturday morning in Montreal’s LaSalle borough was found unconscious on the road a few minutes later.

Montreal police (SPVM) have launched an investigation to determine what happened.

A 911 call around 5:05 a.m. led emergency services to the cyclist, a 40-year-old man. He was seriously injured “in the upper body” following a fall and transported to a hospital. He was unconscious and in critical condition during transport to the hospital, but his life was no longer in danger a few hours later.

“According to initial reports, the cyclist was riding on Senkus Street. Upon reaching the intersection with Cordner Street, he reportedly entered the intersection at the same time as a vehicle. Both parties reportedly braked suddenly to avoid a collision, successfully doing so. Each then reportedly continued on their way,” said Johany Charland, spokesperson for the SPVM.

The investigation will need to determine, in particular, whether the cyclist suffered a medical emergency before his fall.

“The vehicle reportedly left the scene, and the cyclist continued on his way. It was only when he reached the next sidewalk that, for an unknown reason, the cyclist fell to the ground and sustained a serious upper-body injury,” Charland noted.

A perimeter was set up to secure the scene. It was lifted before 8 a.m., but the SPVM’s investigation is ongoing.
