Residents in New Westminster are being cautioned by the local police department about fraudulent QR codes found on parking meters across the city.
These QR code stickers, labeled as “scan to pay,” are designed to lead users to what seems to be a valid payment website. However, the City of New Westminster confirms that they do not utilize QR codes for parking payments.
Investigations reveal that individuals who scanned these codes and inputted their credit card details became victims of fraud. Some have reported unauthorized withdrawals from their bank accounts shortly after using the deceptive payment platform.
The police have disclosed that one victim fell prey to a $2,000 loss due to this scam.
The New Westminster Police Department is actively looking into how these bogus QR code stickers were affixed to the municipal parking meters and is determined to identify the culprits.
Authorities are advising anyone who utilized a QR code for parking payments in the last five days to carefully review their financial statements for any suspicious transactions and promptly report any fraudulent activities to their respective banks.
Sgt. Andrew Leaver, the media relations officer at NWPD, stated, “Our officers have already removed numerous stickers on meters throughout the city. We urge the public to stay vigilant. Despite their appearance of authenticity, valid payment methods are clearly displayed on signs above or on the meter.”
It is crucial for residents to only use the designated payment methods indicated on parking meters or city signage when paying for parking.
