After years of dreaming, Ryan Donais has finally secured a piece of land in Scarborough to create a micro-shelter community. Donais, the Executive Director of Tiny Tiny Homes charity, envisions this space as a transitional haven for individuals moving from the streets to permanent housing.
Expressing his disbelief, Donais shares his excitement with CityNews, stating, “I’m still in shock and awe that this is actually happening.” The plan includes constructing 10 micro homes and a central trailer for communal activities, along with separate washrooms and on-site staff. Each pet-friendly unit will be equipped with essentials like a bed, microwave, fridge, and storage space.
Situated behind a family-owned bakery in the Main Street and Danforth Avenue area, the land was generously leased to Tiny Tiny Homes for a nominal fee of $1 per year for three years by Sefonias Catering CEO, Sefonias Samuel. The total estimated cost of the project is $350,000, with donations from private sources expected to cover the expenses.
The overwhelming support from companies and individuals through material donations and volunteered labor has been heartwarming, according to Donais. Residents in the vicinity have shown encouragement for the initiative and are informed about the development.
City officials are currently reviewing the Scarborough project, with plans to take appropriate actions in accordance with legislative requirements. While waiting for a response from the city’s micro shelter pilot project, Donais remains focused on progressing with the community build. Despite not hearing back officially, he is eager to collaborate with the city in the future.
With the goal of having the Scarborough project operational before the onset of winter, Donais hopes to provide a safe space for those in need within the upcoming months.
