73-year-old man dead in St-Leonard fire

A 73-year-old man lost his life in an overnight Saint-Leonard apartment fire.

Montreal Police (SPVM) was alerted around 1:30 a.m. by Urgences-santé about a fatal fire in an apartment on Avila Street, near Choisy Street.

Despite resuscitation efforts by paramedics, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, said SPVM spokesperson Johany Charland.

The damage is limited to the single dwelling where the fire started, but other apartments had to be evacuated before residents could return.

According to initial findings by firefighters and police, the cause of the fire appears to be accidental, not criminal in origin.

The investigation has been handed over to the SPVM’s arson squad to determine the exact circumstances of the event.

The investigation is ongoing.
