3 sentenced in connection with February shooting — the first convictions in the extortion crisis for Surrey police

Three men have been sentenced in connection with an extortion-related shooting and arson at a home in the Crescent Beach neighbourhood in February, the Surrey Police Service (SPS) says.

On Feb. 1, officers were called to a home near Crescent Road and 132 Street shortly before 4 a.m. after reports of shots fired and a small fire at the property, the SPS says.

Police say three men were arrested a short time later after attempting to get away in a rideshare vehicle.

“We were very quickly able to get these three in custody, so the investigation was pretty much wrapped up right from the beginning,” Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton told 1130 NewsRadio.

“Then our investigators were focused on gathering the evidence so Crown Counsel could lay the appropriate charges.”

On Tuesday, the three were sentenced in Surrey Provincial Court.

Taranveer Singh, who pleaded guilty to reckless discharge of a firearm, has been handed a sentence of five years, less time served. Dayajeet Singh Billing and Harjot Singh both pleaded guilty to throwing an explosive substance, receiving sentences of 27 and 25 months, respectively.

The convictions represent a significant milestone for the SPS.

“These are our first convictions and sentences in the extortion crisis for Surrey Police Service,” Houghton said.
