Two people have died following a residential fire in Montreal’s Saint-Michel district on Saturday morning.
The blaze is believed to have started in a second-floor apartment of a residential building on 42nd Street near 24th Avenue before spreading to the third floor.
Two other occupants were injured and transported to hospital after reportedly jumping from the second floor to escape the flames.
More than 60 firefighters responded to the scene and worked for several hours to bring the fire under control. By approximately 9 a.m., the situation appeared to be contained.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The case has been transferred to the Montreal Police Service (SPVM), although firefighters have reported no indications of criminal activity.
The Canadian Red Cross has deployed personnel to assist residents displaced by the fire. Reports from the scene indicate the dwelling may have been occupied by a family consisting of two adults and two children.
