A serious crash has shut down westbound traffic on the Barnett Highway on Thursday afternoon.
The Burnaby RCMP says that the collision occurred near Cariboo Road north of Burnaby Mountain shortly before 2:30 p.m.
In a written statement, Cpl. Mike Kalanj confirms that the crash involved a cyclist.
“This person has been transported to the hospital with serious injuries,” he said.
The BC Emergency Health Services says that it responded with one ambulance, providing “medical treatment to one patient who was transported to hospital in serious condition.”
Officers are currently on scene, rerouting westbound traffic on Barnett Highway at Reed Point Way.
The Port Moody Police Department is assisting in the road closure.
✅OPEN #BCHwy1 – the highway is now open between #BostonBarBC and #AshcroftBC. ❗️Expect periods of single lane alternating traffic and watch for crews throughout the stretch for electrical maintenance until July 7th. #SawCreekWildfire #BCWildfire ℹ️https://t.co/GKENZmf4E7 https://t.co/xG5NLI9AZ1
Police add that eastbound lanes are open but may be affected when the evening traffic increases.
“My suggestion to anyone that uses Barnett Highway westbound is to avoid it altogether,” Kalanj told 1130 News Radio.
“We are not sure what time we will be opening it. It could be an hour from now; it could be into the late evening.”
He also suggests eastbound travellers use alternative routes.
The Burnaby RCMP has launched an investigation into the crash.
