Burnaby police warns of stranger assault in South Burnaby

Burnaby RCMP is investigating a sexual assault that occurred in early June near Stride Avenue and Griffiths Drive in South Burnaby.

The victim came forward on June 22, to report the incident.

On June 3, at approximately 10:00 p.m., the victim was walking on Griffiths Drive near Stride Avenue when someone approached her from behind and hugged her, causing her to fall to the ground.

The suspect groped her buttocks and covered her mouth while she yelled. The victim fought back causing the suspect to let go and run away, say Burnaby RCMP.

The victim was unable to get a good look at the suspect, but their gender is currently unconfirmed.

The suspect is described as between 5’5” and 5’10”, having a medium build and wearing dark clothing, police say.

“While the description of the suspect is not solid in this case, we want the public to be aware of the incident and to be vigilant while walking alone at night,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj with the Burnaby RCMP. “We’d like to acknowledge the victim’s bravery in coming forward and in fending off the suspect.”
