The Mission Fire Rescue says that crews were called to a fire in the Haven in the Hollow homeless shelter on Saturday shortly after 2:30 p.m.
When crews arrived at the scene on Logan Avenue, between the intersection of Haig Street and Park Street, they encountered “flames and smoke coming from the roof of the building.”
Firefighters searched the structure for possible occupants but were quickly able to confirm that the “building had been fully evacuated.”
Crews continued their effort, knocking down the fire, using a ladder truck and engine.
“The building sustained significant damage, and it is not yet known when residents will be able to return,” the Mission Fire Rescue said in a written statement.
“Residents and staff have been evacuated to a reception centre established in the community gym at the Mission Leisure Centre, where they are being supported by multiple agencies.”
BC Emergency Health Services says that no injuries were reported and no paramedics responded to the scene.
