West-End Toronto Outcry as Metrolinx Ignores Pleas for GO Train Noise Barriers

Residents Upset Over Noise Concerns at Future GO Station in Toronto

Many residents in a west-end Toronto neighborhood are expressing frustration with Metrolinx, alleging that their repeated pleas for noise mitigation near a forthcoming GO Transit station have been ignored.

Metrolinx has been constructing a new Bloor-Lansdowne GO Transit station in recent years to enhance connectivity on the transit network’s Barrie line. The expansion includes adding a second set of tracks and a multi-use path in the existing corridor.

The upcoming Bloor Street West station is intended to accommodate all-day, two-way train traffic, potentially resulting in trains arriving every 15 minutes during peak hours.

Paula Heaney, a resident of a century-old building on St. Helens Avenue, showcased the construction’s impact, highlighting concerns about noise levels. She and other residents have attempted to engage with Metrolinx regarding their worries but feel their concerns have been overlooked.

Armin Krauss, residing on the west side of the rail corridor, echoed Heaney’s sentiments and even displayed a homemade banner advocating for noise walls. Despite some offers from Metrolinx to contribute to noise mitigation measures, residents feel that meaningful actions have not been taken.

The residents are hopeful for quieter trains with the electrification of the Barrie line, although specific timelines for this overhaul remain undisclosed by Metrolinx.
