Toronto to Resume Outdoor Programs Despite Wildfire Smoke Clearing
The City of Toronto has announced that outdoor programming, previously halted due to poor air quality from northern Ontario wildfire smoke, will recommence on Saturday. Following consultations with the city’s medical officer and Environment and Climate Change Canada, officials have decided to revise their response to air quality alerts to ensure a balance between public health concerns and residents’ access to outdoor facilities and services.
In a statement released Saturday morning, the City stated that the decision to resume outdoor programs at 2 p.m. was influenced by the improving air quality conditions throughout the day. Services impacted by the suspension, including outdoor pools, wading pools, lifeguard supervision at beaches, CampTO field trips, and other registered programs, are expected to be back in operation.
Residents eager to enjoy outdoor amenities such as pools, wading pools, and beaches are advised to check the city’s website for reopening schedules. Furthermore, FIFA Fan Festival events scheduled for Saturday and Sunday are set to proceed as planned.
City officials emphasized their commitment to monitoring weather conditions closely and indicated that they are prepared to take further action if necessary. Should air quality deteriorate or public health risks heighten, the City remains ready to temporarily close outdoor services, suspend lifeguard supervision at beaches, and make adjustments to outdoor programming to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.
