The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has launched a new pilot project aimed at enhancing safety for streetcar passengers by utilizing cameras equipped with artificial intelligence technology. The project, which began on Monday, will involve outfitting four streetcars on popular routes with specialized cameras to monitor and capture instances of illegal passing by vehicles.
Gatekeeper Systems, a British Columbia-based company specializing in video systems for transit networks, has been awarded a contract by the TTC to install these cameras on selected streetcars. The cameras are designed to automatically capture evidence of vehicles violating streetcar zones, enabling authorities to take enforcement actions such as issuing fines to offenders.
Doug Dyment, the CEO of Gatekeeper Systems, highlighted the efficiency of the AI-powered system in identifying violations without the need for manual review of hours of footage. This innovative approach aims to streamline the enforcement process and improve safety for streetcar riders.
TTC CEO Mandeep Lali emphasized that the project is primarily focused on enhancing safety and evaluating the effectiveness of the technology. The initiative will be closely monitored, with regular reviews of the captured data to assess its impact on reducing incidents of vehicles endangering streetcar passengers.
Mayor Olivia Chow expressed support for the pilot project, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding transit riders from dangerous situations caused by illegal passing. While the enforcement of fines through the camera system is pending government approval, there is a strong push for implementing measures to deter reckless driving behavior around streetcars.
Vincent Puhakka, a volunteer with the advocacy group TTCriders and a regular streetcar passenger, welcomed the camera initiative as a long-overdue step towards addressing safety concerns. He emphasized the need for stricter enforcement measures to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and protect vulnerable streetcar passengers.
