Montreal Police Bust Major Fake Document Lab: Identity Fraud Ring Exposed

Authorities in Montreal recently dismantled a clandestine operation specializing in the production of fake passports, driver’s licenses, and various other counterfeit documents. The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) disclosed that a joint effort involving their Economic Crimes and Cybercrime Investigation Unit, along with the Montreal and Gatineau police forces and the Laboratoire de sciences judiciaires et de médecine légale, led to the shutdown of this illicit “document lab” on July 8.

During the operation, more than 250 items essential for manufacturing counterfeit documents were confiscated, alongside three vehicles. Additionally, one individual was apprehended in connection with the illegal activities.

The SQ highlighted the extensive capabilities of the facility, which could create a diverse array of counterfeit documents, including passports from countries like Canada, France, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Italy. Moreover, the operation was capable of producing fake driver’s licenses from multiple Canadian provinces and US states, birth certificates, firearms acquisition permits, and Quebec health insurance cards.

Marie-Hélène Poulin, the head of the SQ’s Economic Crimes and Cybercrime Investigation Unit, emphasized the sophistication of the equipment seized, noting its ability to produce top-quality forged documents.

The investigation is ongoing, focusing on recovering substantial amounts from a bank account associated with the operation. Two vehicles were also seized as part of the proceeds of criminal activities.

While the identity of the arrested individual was not disclosed by the SQ, charges including forgery and the use, possession, or distribution of counterfeit documents are being considered.
