British Columbia’s law enforcement agency announces the apprehension of a murder suspect from Quebec, thanks to a collaborative effort among police forces nationwide.
The Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit disclosed that three individuals were charged earlier this year in connection with the killing of Sébastien Giroux in Montreal on May 11, 2022. Following the charges, two suspects were taken into custody, while one, Lee Van Smath Germain, remained at large.
After authorities in Montreal discovered Germain’s connections to British Columbia, a joint operation was initiated with the help of the unit and Metro Vancouver Transit Police. The coordinated effort culminated in a successful raid at a residence in Burnaby, B.C., resulting in Germain’s arrest.
Following the arrest, Germain appeared in court and was remanded into custody for six days before being extradited to Quebec to face the murder allegations.
Sgt. Sarbjit K. Sangha of the enforcement unit emphasized the significance of collaborative policing efforts, stating, “When police agencies share information and cooperate effectively, there are few places that criminals can escape justice.”
