Crime Rates in B.C. Drop for Second Consecutive Year
Statistics Canada recently released data showing a decrease in British Columbia’s Crime Severity Index (CSI) for the second year in a row. The CSI, based on police-reported crime statistics from 2025, has seen a significant drop of nearly 12% since 2023.
Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Nina Krieger, attributed this positive trend to collaborative efforts and investments in enforcement, intervention, and community partnerships. Krieger emphasized the government’s commitment to building a safer province through initiatives such as increased policing, mental health and addiction support, housing programs, and crime prevention strategies.
The report highlighted reductions in various crime categories, including a 7% decrease in extortion offences, a 2% decline in shoplifting incidents, and a notable 21% drop in child sexual abuse cases. While acknowledging these improvements, Krieger emphasized the ongoing need to address issues such as repeat offenders and organized crime.
Recent initiatives like the Community Safety and Targeted Enforcement Program, the Repeat Violent Offending Intervention Initiative, and the Chronic Property Offending Intervention Initiative have been praised for their contributions to enhancing public safety. Additionally, advocacy efforts have led to legislative reforms, including amendments to the Criminal Code through Bill C-14, aimed at tackling serious criminal activities.
Looking ahead, Krieger affirmed the province’s commitment to implementing effective strategies that yield sustainable outcomes in the fight against crime.
