A young harbor seal pup, now named “Canadian Bacon,” was recently rescued by a joint effort from the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) Marine Unit and the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society (VAMMR). The pup was discovered alone and in distress on the shoreline at Seymour Bay near Cowan Point after a visitor to Bowen Island raised the alarm. Responding swiftly, the VPD Marine Unit dispatched three veterinary technicians via their vessel to locate the stranded pup. Upon arrival, the team successfully secured the female pup, estimated to be around a week old, and affectionately named her “Canadian Bacon.” She was then transported to the VAMMR facility for necessary medical care. The dedicated VAMMR staff are optimistic that with proper treatment, “Canadian Bacon” will be able to return to the wild in the coming months.
