Chilliwack Welcomes New Affordable Housing for Low-Income Residents
A brand-new affordable rental housing complex has opened its doors in the heart of Chilliwack, offering a solution to the housing needs of low-income individuals and families. Named Cedar Lá:lém, this six-storey, 64-unit building on 45835 Spadina Avenue provides one- and two-bedroom homes tailored to meet the financial constraints of its residents.
Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs, Christine Boyle, emphasized the importance of offering diverse housing options that allow people to live, work, and thrive in their community. She highlighted how this community-centered housing initiative promotes stability, strengthens social connections, and creates opportunities for individuals looking to establish roots in Chilliwack.
The collaborative effort behind Cedar Lá:lém involved the Province of British Columbia, the City of Chilliwack, Mamele’awt Qweesome Housing Society (MQHS), the Aboriginal Housing Management Association (AHMA), and Cheam View United Church. The funding for this project was made possible through the province’s Community Housing Fund.
Cheam View United Church, the property owner, has leased the site to MQHS for a 60-year term. Plans are in place to include a residential amenities building on the premises. The city of Chilliwack demonstrated its commitment to the cause by waiving over $1 million in fees to support the development.
Mayor Ken Popove expressed the city’s dedication to increasing the availability of affordable housing options through initiatives like Cedar Lá:lém. This project aligns with Chilliwack’s Homelessness Action Plan, aiming to provide safe and affordable homes for low-income families and individuals in the area.
