The petition advocates for the official recognition of Canadian Chinese Heritage Month to create a platform for learning, contemplation, and joy, fostering unity and mutual understanding among all citizens.
Scheduled to kick off with a press conference at the Chinese Family Service of Greater Montreal, the campaign seeks to honor the valuable contributions of Chinese Canadians while acknowledging the hardships and discrimination endured by the community throughout Canada’s past.
The petition specifically urges the government to designate February as Canadian Chinese Heritage Month to coincide with the Lunar New Year, spotlighting the 1.8 million individuals of Chinese descent in Canada. It emphasizes their pivotal role in shaping the country’s social tapestry since the 1800s, notably through crucial nation-building endeavors such as the Canadian Pacific Railway.
Moreover, the petition highlights past injustices like the Chinese Head Tax and the discriminatory Chinese Immigration Act of 1923, which inflicted long-lasting harm on Chinese Canadian families and marginalized the community for years.
Advocates argue that although Asian Heritage Month in May celebrates the diversity of Asian communities, it falls short in fully capturing the unique historical narratives, cultural richness, and substantial contributions of Chinese Canadians.
