Police departments throughout the province are ramping up their enforcement efforts this weekend in response to the surge in summer water activities. Under the umbrella of a national coordinated operation, the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) has announced a targeted initiative aimed at addressing risky behavior by recreational boaters.
The focus of this operation is to identify and address boaters who pose a threat to themselves or others while navigating the waterways, both at the docks and on the open water. According to SQ, a significant number of accidents, including collisions, capsizings, and drownings, are attributed to human error.
In a statement released on Friday, SQ emphasized the importance of understanding one’s boat and being well-versed in its equipment to mitigate the risks associated with inexperience during boating activities.
Additionally, officials have provided key recommendations for safe boating practices. Among these recommendations is a strong advisory against consuming alcohol while operating a boat, as it dramatically elevates the likelihood of accidents, injuries, and even fatalities. Violations related to alcohol consumption on watercraft can also lead to legal repercussions under the Criminal Code.
