Environment Canada has issued a special weather alert for Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), warning of potential heavy rainfall, while Cottage Country is under a rainfall warning.
According to Environment Canada, the rain is forecasted to begin late Saturday and continue through Sunday. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to move through the region, with the possibility of localized heavy rainfall reaching up to 50 millimetres in some areas.
The statement highlights the risk of water pooling on roads and in low-lying areas, as well as intermittent reductions in visibility.
The special weather statement covers a wide area, including Toronto, Halton, Peel, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Pickering, Oshawa, Southern Durham Region, Hamilton, and Niagara.
Meanwhile, Cottage Country, which includes Barrie, Orillia, Collingwood, Meaford, Kincardine, Burk’s Falls, Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Parry Sound, Bancroft, and Haliburton, is under a yellow rainfall warning. Environment Canada warns of potential rainfall totals ranging from 50 to 80 millimetres in these regions.
Meteorologist Carl Lam from 680 NewsRadio explains that the rain is expected to intensify in the later afternoon, with the atmospheric moisture potentially leading to rapid downpours and localized flooding.
