Montreal Celebrates Great Peace Anniversary with Indigenous Reconciliation Focus
The City of Montreal is honoring the 325th anniversary of the Great Peace of Montreal by reiterating its dedication to fostering reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. At a ceremony held at the Pointe-à-Callière Museum, Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada emphasized the importance of recognizing the historic treaty as a symbol of dialogue, respect, and collaboration.
Mayor Martinez Ferrada announced the city’s official recognition of the Great Peace as a significant historical event, marking a milestone in Montreal’s commitment to working in partnership with Indigenous nations. In line with this commitment, the city is actively developing an Indigenous housing strategy to address issues such as housing, homelessness, and community support, building upon its existing Reconciliation Strategy.
In a bid to further support Indigenous communities, the city has allocated $100,000 towards public events organized by Indigenous groups, underscoring its dedication to amplifying Indigenous voices and initiatives in Montreal. These initiatives aim to enhance relationships with Indigenous Peoples and ensure that municipal programs align closely with their unique needs and priorities.
