Authorities in British Columbia are closely monitoring the aftermath of a destructive wildfire that tore through Okanagan Lake, with more potential fires looming as dry lightning storms are predicted for the upcoming week.
Cliff Chapman, a spokesperson for the BC Wildfire Service, has highlighted that temperatures are set to rise to the mid-30s, with dry lightning anticipated on Thursday. This weather combination could ignite additional fires across the southern Interior region, where the majority of the province’s approximately 115 wildfires are currently active.
Prepared for the worst, the wildfire service has helicopters and fixed-wing planes on standby to rapidly respond to any new fire outbreaks in what is expected to be a challenging week of firefighting ahead.
The devastating impact of the wildfire was felt by the Okanagan Indian Band, where over 230 homes on the reserve were destroyed by the rapid spread of the flames over the weekend.
Currently, there are six significant wildfires in British Columbia, all posing threats to communities in the southern Interior region.
