After 26 successful years, the Richmond Night Market, a beloved summer hotspot in Metro Vancouver, has announced that the current season will be its final one. Among the many small businesses that thrived at the Night Market is Poncho’s Birria, a venture launched by a group of high school graduates in 2023.
Matthew Berda, a co-owner of Poncho’s Birria, reminisces about the early days of the business, noting the rapid growth in customer orders and the overwhelming support from patrons. The unique menu and active social media presence of the business quickly set it apart from the rest, drawing in a loyal following.
Kenito Garrido, another co-owner, highlights the positive feedback received from customers, praising the team for creating exceptional tacos and grilled cheese sandwiches. Poncho’s Birria is just one example of the many small businesses that flourished within the vibrant atmosphere of the Night Market.
Over the years, the Night Market has transformed from a modest gathering to a premier destination, attracting over a million visitors annually. Nancy Small, CEO of Tourism Richmond, acknowledges the market’s significant contribution to the local economy and tourism sector.
As the lease at the current location nears its end, the organizers have made the difficult decision to close the Night Market. Small expresses sadness at the prospect of this iconic market moving away from Richmond, leaving a void in the community.
Despite the closure, Poncho’s Birria plans to continue its presence at other street festivals. Co-owner Mikito May reflects on the impact of the Night Market’s closure, emphasizing its role as a yearly gathering where people could explore diverse food options and support local vendors.
The Richmond Night Market’s final day of operation is set for Sept. 20, marking the end of an era for this cherished summer tradition.
