A devastating wildfire rages through the Northern Okanagan region, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. 91-year-old Freddy Louis was forced to flee the home he had cherished for over five decades in just a matter of minutes.
Louis expressed his deep connection to the now-ravaged home, calling it the only true home he had known for the past 50-60 years.
Recently, the Bradley Creek wildfire swept through the Okanagan Indian Band Reserve, obliterating hundreds of properties, including Louis’s residence. In the midst of the chaotic evacuation, Louis vividly remembers the rapid spread of the flames, realizing the severity of the situation.
Recalling the frantic evacuation, Louis hurried back to gather a few belongings in a small bag, ensuring his beloved dog, Princess, was safe by his side.
Currently residing in temporary shelter at a Vernon hotel, Louis mourns the loss of cherished possessions, including his late wife’s beloved photo album, filled with precious memories captured over the years.
The Bradley Creek wildfire continues to rage uncontrollably, alongside the Quilpituk Creek wildfire burning between Vernon and Kelowna. The escalating situation has prompted seven evacuation orders and four alerts as of Friday.
Vernon Mayor Victor Cumming reassured the affected community of ongoing support and assistance amid the crisis, acknowledging the hardships faced by many residents.
