The Ontario Line budget has seen significant increases since its initial estimate in 2019. Originally projected at $10.9 billion, the costs have now soared to around $29 billion according to Metrolinx’s recent State of the Network report. The latest contract awarded for the Pape tunnel and underground stations is valued at $4.32 billion, pushing the total estimated costs close to $34 billion.
During a press conference commemorating the completion of tunneling for the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension, Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay addressed concerns about the escalating budget. Lindsay acknowledged the challenges faced, citing supply chain disruptions and trade uncertainties as key factors contributing to the rising costs.
While emphasizing the transparent nature of the procurement process, Lindsay highlighted that every line item undergoes a competitive bidding process, with finalized contracts made public online. Despite the ongoing cost pressures, Lindsay refrained from confirming a new total budget until the pending contract for the elevated guideways and stations component is concluded.
The construction of the 16-kilometre Ontario Line commenced in March 2022 with an anticipated completion date of 2031, four years beyond the original schedule.
